meet Lisa Blalock, LMHC, CST
Hi, I'm Lisa.
I believe that we all deserve to surround ourselves with happy, healthy relationships that only improve our overall wellbeing. While understanding that relationships do not come easy all of the time, you can learn to better understand them and cultivate deeper connections.
As a relationship therapist, I can share my knowledge and experience with how to improve communications, set boundaries, process those that we may need to distance ourselves from and enjoy those who we want to share our life with.
We are all sexual beings and I believe that your sexual health impacts your sense of self and your connections to others every day. You deserve to feel comfortable, satisfied and content with this part of you. As a Certified Sex Therapist, my goal is to help you navigate the questions, fears, confusion and frustration that may come with your sexual side. I also find great joy in helping you find satisfaction, fun and the happy, sexual you.
My Approach
So, what is it like to be in a session with me?
Well, it might be helpful for you to know first what you will not see in a session with me.
Most people do not seek therapy to just watch someone nod in agreement and ask over and over, “How did that make you feel?” I will not be sitting at my desk looking over at you taking notes as if you were in your boss’s office. While I am happy to share with you all the different therapeutic modalities I may use during any given session, most of time you just want to feel better and walk away learning something. You could not care less if it is CBT, DBT, narrative therapy and so on. I will not use big clinical words to try to show my level of knowledge. (Although if that is helpful to you, then by all means, I can oblige. After all, this is your hour 😊)
Now, what will a session look like with me?
I will be sitting in my comfy chair having a conversation with you.
I will ask you questions.
I may challenge you (gently, of course).
My mission is to provide a compassionate and non-judgmental space where you can explore, process, and overcome sexual health and relationship obstacles.
My approach is grounded in empathy, compassion and respect. I may help you challenge old patterns or approaches to find new ones that will allow you greater happiness in your sexual health and relationships.
I will actively listen and clarify if I do not understand something. I will be transparent and honest. I do not want you to ever leave my office and wonder if I heard a word you said. Although, I may ask you “How did that make you feel?” (after all, I am a therapist, lol) – I will follow that up with helping you understand what might be behind those emotions.
I have a good sense of humor as I believe humor can get us through some tough days.
That said, I am also very empathetic. I can meet you where you are and hold your emotions and pain while you process them. Seeking therapy can be scary and triggering for some. I consider it an honor to take this journey with you and do not take it lightly.
I guess this is the part where I share a bit about myself and how I became what I am today.
So here goes...
I have always known I wanted to be a therapist from the time I was in grade school. I met a school counselor who was warm and showed genuine care. From then on, I aspired to make an impact on others. But I also owe it to my father who had a way with others and could talk to anyone about anything. He encouraged my love of how we are all different.
I obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, then found myself working in the medical sector doing palliative and hospice care, while also helping others adjust to major medical changes.
Throughout my life, love, loss, and all things relationships were present. My life took a turn and I found myself divorced with high school aged children. I took this time to pursue my Master’s degree, something which had been on hold to raise my children. I returned to school as an adult learner. Imagine my surprise when I entered the library and could not find the card catalog (just kidding, sort of). I loved being back at school. My dream of having my own practice which I held for twenty-something years, was finally coming true.
Following my Master’s degree in Counseling and starting a private practice, I met my now husband and we became a blended family. This gave me new insight into navigating the challenges and joys of being in a relationship after several years of independence.
So, you may be asking where the Sex Therapy
piece of my practice came in.
Once I became a Social Worker, my thirst for sexual health knowledge, educating others and learning how we function as sexual beings came to light. So, when I started my practice, I once again found myself back at school and pursued an education at the University of Michigan where I worked towards my AASECT (American Association for Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists). This has greatly enriched my practice.
My own life experiences along with my education undoubtedly led me to my passion of working with others to enhance relationships and embrace their sexual side. If you read this all the way through, I thank you!
My Core Values & Beliefs
I believe that no one person or couple is the same. I don’t believe in a cookie cutter approach, as it is not a one-size-fits-all. Each person and couple is unique and brings their own ideals, values, history and story to the table.
I strongly value integrity, honesty, kindness, being authentically yourself, acceptance, compassion, and being inclusive to all.
